Our maintenance crew

It all began early in 1958 when 12 families signed a petition on Easter weekend asking the Bishop to explore the possibility of establishing an Episcopal church in Crown Point.

On May 4, 1958, an organizational meeting was held at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church with 58 persons attending. Permission was given Bishop Mallet to lay groundwork with a meeting to be held in the late summer.

On August 3, 1958, a second meeting of interested persons was held at the Durfee home with 41 in attendance. The name chosen for the new church was “St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church.”

The first service was held on September 7, 1958, using the Methodist church facilities and Bishop Mallet was the celebrant. Regular services were begun on September 21st with Rev. Forrest B. Clark of St. Andrew’s in Valparaiso as Priest-in-Charge.

Today, you can find St. Christopher’s in its own facilities; a white building with an illuminated blue and white sign ˝ mile south of the hospital on the west side of Marshall/Court Street in Crown Point.

  Of Interest

The Episcopal Shield was adopted by the General Convention in 1940.  The red cross on the white field is the St. George Cross.  It indicates the link between the Episcopal Church and the Church of England, the mother church of the Anglican Communion.  The colors, red, white, and blue are the colors of the flags of both the United States and England.

The miniature crosses in the blue quadrant symbolize the nine original American dioceses that met in Philadelphia in 1789 to adopt the constitution of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States of America.  The outline of the miniature crosses is in the form of the St. Andrew’s Cross in tribute to the Scottish church’s role in ordaining the first American Bishops, Samuel Seabury being the first one of the three ordained by the Church of /Scotland in 1784, to maintain Trinity and succession.
